How to Get a Concealed Carry Permit in NYC (2026 Guide)

Getting a concealed carry license in New York City is one of the most demanding processes in the country. It is entirely doable — but the margin for error is small, and a single missing document can set you back months. This guide walks through the whole path.

Are you eligible?

Before anything else, three things must be true:

  • You are 21 or older.
  • You are a resident of one of the five boroughs, or you have your principal place of business in NYC. (Applicants outside the city generally need a separate Special Carry license.)
  • You are legally allowed to possess a firearm — no felony or other disqualifying convictions, and no disqualifying mental-health or restraining-order history.

NYC does not recognize carry licenses issued by other New York counties.

Complete your training

New York's Concealed Carry Improvement Act (CCIA) requires 18 hours of training: 16 hours of in-person classroom instruction plus 2 hours of live-fire range time, taught by a DCJS-approved instructor. You must also pass a written test at 80% or higher.

Gather your documents

This is where most applications stumble. You'll need a government photo ID, four notarized character references, a notarized cohabitant affidavit for every adult in your home, a three-year social media account list, proof of training, two photos of your gun safe, and proof of residence or business.

We cover each of these in detail in our documents guide.

File and interview

The application is filed online through the NYPD Licensing portal. You'll pay roughly a $340 license fee plus a separate fingerprinting fee, then attend an in-person interview at the License Division, where you'll be fingerprinted and your background investigated.

How long it takes

Plan on roughly six months from a complete submission to a decision. The license term is three years, after which you renew.

The bottom line

The process rewards precision. If you'd rather not manage 13 stages and a stack of notarized paperwork yourself, check your eligibility and let Gun License NYC handle the execution.
